RUSSELL SPRINGS, KY — A Russell Springs man was arrested after a two-vehicle crash on the Cumberland Parkway killed another local driver Monday afternoon, according to Kentucky State Police. Investigators said the wreck happened around 2:30 p.m. when one westbound vehicle left the roadway, then came back into traffic and struck another westbound vehicle. The Russell County Coroner’s Office pronounced the other driver dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police Post 15.
How The Crash Unfolded
State police said 28-year-old Christopher Austin of Russell Springs was driving a 2016 Kia Optima west on the parkway when the car went onto the left shoulder. When Austin steered back onto the roadway, police said he entered the path of a 2020 Jeep Cherokee driven by 66-year-old Maylon Brown, Jr. The impact involved both vehicles traveling in the same direction. Authorities have not released additional details about the collision beyond the sequence described in the preliminary report.
Victim Identified At Scene
Brown was pronounced dead where the crash happened by the Russell County Coroner’s Office. Officials did not release any further information about his condition before the fatal wreck or whether anyone else was hurt. Austin refused medical treatment at the scene, according to the report. The fatality occurred on a busy stretch of roadway that carries traffic through Russell County, but investigators have not said whether weather, speed or another factor contributed.
Charges Filed By Troopers
Kentucky State Police arrested Austin after the crash and charged him with vehicular homicide when under the influence of drugs. He also faces charges of driving under the influence of a controlled substance, second offense, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and reckless driving. Troopers said the arrest followed the fatal collision on the parkway. Austin was taken to the Russell County Detention Center after being processed.
Investigation Still Ongoing
Trooper Brandon Roark of Kentucky State Police Post 15 is continuing the investigation. Police have not said whether additional charges could be filed or whether the crash report will include further findings about impairment or roadway conditions. For now, the case centers on a deadly two-vehicle wreck that turned a routine Monday drive into a fatal encounter on the Cumberland Parkway. Officials say the investigation remains active as they continue to review the circumstances.
