I look handsome, I look smart. I am a walking work of art. Such a dazzling tie dye shirt of many colors, how I love my tie dye shirt of many colors. For those that do not know, that was just a modified quote from the Song “Joseph’s Coat” from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. In the original song, it shows how Joseph’s coat was special from its many colors, but it also perfectly describes my life view on tie dye shirts!
Tie dye shirts are so underrated because they create a sense of style that is not found in any other type of clothing. Creating your own shirt from dyes is an experience you will never forget and I recommend that everyone should try to tie dye at least once in their life.
Tie dyeing allows for you to create the perfect shirt with the design that you would love to wear while simultaneously acting like a work of art that you made. For me, I find great confidence in my tie dye t-shirt design and I am nothing but proud. I am sure if you tried tie dyeing for the first time, you would have a very similar experience as your new shirt wouldn’t just become some item in your closet, but something that you worked for, designed, and put your dreams into that now has meaning to be worn.
But if you decide to try tie dyeing, I have a few tips to make sure that your tie dye shirt turns out to be the wondrous piece of art you would hope it would be. My first tip would be to stick to just a few colors at the start. You may want to go wild with a bunch of different colors, but sometimes the most simple shirts can be amazing. Some of my favorite tie dye shirts just have 2 or 3 colors on them. Additionally, I would suggest that you make sure that the colors you do decide to use match with each other. For example, just stick to some warmer tones of red, orange, and yellow or cooler tones of green, blue and purple. Also, stay clear of sticking colors that might turn to brown right next to each other like purple and yellow, green and red, and blue and orange. You may have a beautiful shirt but a big brown strip in the middle depending on what colors you use. If that is the shirt you are after, that is totally okay, but if that is not the image you really want, I would suggest at least separating these colors that turn brown by at least one other color! Finally, I would definitely suggest setting aside a large amount of time for this process. The initial tie dye does not take that long or even wash out the dye, but I would definitely suggest doing it over 2 days. That way, you can set aside one day for the dyeing that will probably take an hour and the second day for allowing your dye to set, rinsing out your dye, and washing your shirts, which could take around 2 hours.
Overall, tie dyeing can be an awesome way to add a new piece of artwork that has amazing meaning to your wardrobe. Just like in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, your tie dye shirt would be something that you earned and not just received, like how Joseph earned his dreamcoat from being a fantastic person from his father. It can be challenging to tie dye for the first time as there are many different challenges that you may encounter, but taking the first step will definitely be worth it. I hope my tips help and that you definitely consider adding your own amazing technicolor tie dye shirt to your wardrobe!
