Reflections on Martin Luther King, Jr.

Autumn Chase

This was an essay that I won first place for in my state and was selected to read the essay in front of a Martin Luther King, Jr convention:
“The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace and brotherhood.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., once said for one to be brave, they must have faith and for one to have faith, they must be brave. Our world is full of incidents of injustice. Many think that being brave is not saying anything, not taking an aggressor’s bait, but they are wrong. Being brave in the cause of justice means standing up for your beliefs and not letting others speak for you. If Dr. Martin Luther King didn’t speak out, who knows where African Americans would stand now.
“Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable,” you must work for what you believe in. I myself have always been a firm believer in perseverance. I know that God will only give you what you can handle, so I believe in myself and work hard. The best feeling is when you see the finish line in your near future. The feeling you get when you earn your success, it’s not even explainable. It always reminds me that the hard work and perseverance was definitely worth it.
“Only in the darkness can you see the stars.” Bravery is something that only few possess. When you believe in something so much that you would give your life for it, that is bravery! When you go out of your comfort zone to do something that you have never done before. That is bravery! Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. You must work hard to get where you want to be. Martin Luther King was a strong believer in what he wanted to see change in the world, which was American rights. He believed that with perseverance and positivity, you can get anywhere, and that is exactly what he did.
“The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.” Speak out. Don’t be silent because how far have silent people ever gotten? The answer is nowhere. Dr. Martin Luther King once said that “Lightning makes no sound until it strikes.” Let that be your inspiration to go out there and be the spark that makes the world a better place.
