EAST ST. LOUIS, IL — A 15-year-old was taken into custody Monday after authorities found a body in a roadway in East St. Louis, according to Illinois State Police. Investigators have not identified the victim or said how the person died. The arrest came after officers began looking into the death scene in the southwestern Illinois city. State police have not said whether the teenager is considered the main suspect in the case.

What neighbors reported

People in the area told investigators they saw the teen going door to door while dressed in a clown costume. They said he was also looking into windows and carrying a large knife. Those accounts helped draw attention to the teenager before the body was discovered. Authorities have not said whether the reported sightings are directly linked to the death investigation, and no additional details about the witness statements have been released.

Ring camera footage

Police also reviewed Ring doorbell video recorded less than an hour before the body was found. The footage showed an individual approaching a home, looking into the camera and saying, “I have a gift for you.” Officials did not say whether the person in the video was the same teenager taken into custody. The clip adds another piece of evidence to a case that remains under active investigation.

Questions still unanswered

State police have released only limited information about the death. They have not shared the victim’s name, the cause of death or the circumstances that led to the body being found in the roadway. The agency also has not explained what charges, if any, the teenager faces beyond the arrest itself. Because the suspect is a juvenile, authorities have provided few identifying details.

Investigation continues

The case remains open as investigators work to determine what happened before and after the body was discovered. At this stage, officials are withholding key facts and have not announced whether more arrests are possible. The death investigation, the witness reports and the video evidence all appear to be part of the same unfolding review. Illinois State Police have said only that the matter is ongoing.
