Emergency vehicles respond to a fatal three-vehicle crash near Channahon on Interstate 55 frontage road

CHANNAHON, IL — One person was killed and two others were hurt in a three-vehicle crash Tuesday evening on the Frontage Road to Arsenal Road off Interstate 55 near Channahon. Illinois State Police said the wreck happened around 6:30 p.m. on May 26 and involved two truck tractor semi-trailers and a passenger vehicle. Three people were taken to area hospitals after the crash. The southbound lanes of the Frontage Road were closed for nearly four hours while crews responded.

Crash involved three vehicles

Investigators said the collision included two commercial tractor-trailers and one passenger car. Police did not release additional details about how the crash unfolded or what may have caused it. The limited information released so far does not identify which vehicle the people injured were riding in. Illinois State Police said the crash remains under review and no further facts were provided at the scene.

Coroner identifies victim

The Will County Coroner’s Office said the person who died was Michael Ortiz Gomez, 32, of Westmont. He was pronounced dead at St. Joe’s Medical Center as a result of injuries from the crash. Officials said an autopsy was completed Wednesday. The final cause and manner of death will be determined after the autopsy findings are combined with police and toxicology reports.

Road closed for hours

The crash caused a major traffic disruption on the southbound Frontage Road near the interstate interchange. Authorities kept the roadway shut down for almost four hours while emergency responders and investigators worked at the scene. That closure affected traffic in the Channahon area during the evening hours. No timeline was given for any additional investigation steps beyond the pending reports.

What investigators released

Illinois State Police said no other details were being released at this time. That means the sequence of events, the role each vehicle played and whether any citations will follow have not yet been made public. The pending reports from police, toxicology and the autopsy will guide the next formal findings. For now, authorities have confirmed only the fatality, the injuries and the vehicles involved.
