The Amish are a very kind and well-natured people, but there is not much
known about them. For a school project, I did research on these
communities and found them to be extremely interesting. I think if other
people would care to do their research, they would find them interesting as
well.

Amish communities are usually located in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana.
The biggest Amish community is in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Temperatures in the different states are very similar to one another. In
Pennsylvania, the average temperature in July is around 70 degrees
Fahrenheit and around 28 degrees Fahrenheit in January.
The Amish live in large houses with many rooms. These houses include
a kitchen, a living room, a basement, and many bedrooms. They also have
outhouses that are used in place of flushing toilets.
Amish clothes have many different rules and regulations. Some of the
things that they wear include dark-colored suits, straight-cut coats with no
lapels, broadfall trousers, suspenders, solid-colored shirts, black socks and
shoes, and black or straw broad-brimmed hats. They dress modestly in
order to keep their hearts and bodies pure. Women keep their hair covered
so that they can pray at any time during the day. After the men are married,
they must grow beards. Amish girls go barefoot so that they can be closer to
the earth and to God.
The Amish eat a lot of bland food such as roasted chicken, mashed potatoes
& gravy, seasoned vegetables, fresh bread, and homemade jam. They also
drink coffee and sometimes alcohol. They also only use traditional
seasoning on their food, such as pepper and paprika.
The Amish speak a mix of Pennsylvania Dutch and English. Ascension Day
is a day the Amish celebrate precisely 40 days after Easter. It is celebrated
to remember Jesus’ return to heaven. On this day, work is put off and shops
are closed so that members of the community can spend time with their
family. It is highly unlikely for them to have a big feast on this day.
Instead, most members will have small picnics with family, friends and
other churchgoers.

out and work and provide for their family while the women are meant to
stay at home, clean, and cook. Amish families usually have around 7-8
children. Everyone in the family is expected to help provide financially in
some way. Some jobs in the Amish community are agriculture, carpentry,
woodworking, metalworking, and running small businesses. They also have
checking accounts, and some even use credit cards.

The Amish follow the traditionalist Anabaptist Christian church. They live
simple lives to focus their lives on Christ. They go to church every other
Sunday due to the poor road conditions. Starting at age 16, young Amish
men and women can decide whether or not they want to stay in the
Christian faith and be baptized. They read the Martin Luther version of the
bible. Divorce is not allowed as it is considered “a violation of the vow

In summary, people should try to educate themselves on people who have
different lifestyles than them before passing judgment. I personally used to
think that the Amish were judgmental and wanted to pass their beliefs
onto everyone, but after researching this community, I realized that they are
people like you and me who are just trying to live their lives with their beliefs.
